BMW S62 “Better Than Stock” Longblock
Every Detail of the BMW S62 Engine, Blueprinted and Improved
The Partee Racing “Better Than Stock” Longblock is a complete, precision-built upgrade for the BMW S62 engine. Years of track development, real-world data, and failure analysis shaped this design. This build corrects factory weaknesses, increases reliability, and delivers the strongest version of the BMW S62 engine available today.
CNC Machining and Honing for the BMW S62 Engine
We use our RMC V40 CNC machining center to "square" the block relative to the crankshaft centerline, removing as little from the deck height on each bank to do so and to obtain the surface roughness (Ra) to ensure a perfect head gasket seal. We do this with the front timing cover in place, which ensures perfect cylinder-to-head alignment. The block is then honed to within .0001" of final bore size using multiple diamond stones in our Sunnen SV-10. Final bore size is calculated to accept the proprietary forged 2618 alloy pistons made for us by JE, which are .010" oversize, and to achieve the appropriate piston to wall clearance, which varies with application. We then use a semi-manual hone to recondition the Alusil cylinder walls in order to achieve specific surface roughness standards (Ra, RpK, RvK, Mr1, Mr2), as confirmed on a cylinder by cylinder basis with a profilometer. We developed those surface roughness standards over the course of nearly a decade of building Alusil engines, and when reviewed by outside experts, their response was "just keep doing what you are doing because that's perfect." We also have confirmed that they exceed the surface roughness standards exhibited by new BMW S62 engine blocks from the factory. At all times during the block machining process, we use two torque plates torqued with the fasteners and to the specifications that will be used with the cylinder heads when assembled. This process ensures that the significant distortion cause by the cylinder head bolts or studs is replicated during the machining process and ensures concentricity of the bores once the engine is assembled.
Forged Components and Balanced Internals
Each longblock includes our proprietary design of pistons manufactured for us by JE forged from high-strength 2618 alloy.
DLC-coated wrist pins made from H7 tool steal and
Total Seal Alusil rings are installed to handle extreme load. OEM connecting rods are reconditioned, checked for tolerance, and rebuilt with
ARP2000 rod bolts torqued to spec without altering the bearing crush. Aftermarket Carrillo or Arrow rods are available as an upgrade at additional expense.
The crankshaft is straightened if needed, polished for smooth operation, and then the rotating assembly is balanced to within 1 gram. This accuracy is far tighter than standard industry practice.
Headwork, Vanos, and Solenoids Rebuilt
We deck the cylinder heads to achieve the requisite flatness and with the requisite Ra to maximize gasket seal. We check all valve guides, and if out of spec, we install custom motorsport-quality replacements made from Moldstar 90 as replacements at additional expense. New OEM springs complete the assembly.
Vanos units are ultrasonically cleaned and rebuilt with Beisan seals and upgraded BMW lock rings.. Vanos solenoids are tested, cleaned with electronic activation, and new D-rings installed. We remove the factory solenoid screens, reflow weak solder joints, and pressure test every board. Any faulty solenoids or MOVs are replaced at additional expense. This guarantees Vanos function you can trust.
Assembly and Final Touches
We assemble every BMW S62 engine longblock using authentic WPC-treated BMW bearings. All tolerances, including rod and main clearances, piston height, and axial movement, are measured and blueprinted. Customers can request a full specification report with their build.
Each S62 receives our Partee Racing uprated u-shaped guide and bank 1 tensioner strip that employ Stanyl 46 replacements for BMW's brittle brown plastic and carry a lifetime warranty. You will never have to replace timing guides again. New BMW stretch bolts, chains, tensioners, and bank 2 fixed tensioner are installed. Valve covers are powdercoated in wrinkle black, coolant pipes in matte black, and covers bead-blasted for a factory aluminum finish. A new BMW water pump, thermostat, and all related gaskets are included.
Payment, Shipping, Core Policy, and Lead Time
Engine builds require a minimum deposit in the amount of 75% deposit up front, with the balance due upon completion. The listed price does NOT include the $4000 core charge without vanos (meaning you supply two S62 vanos units with solenoid boards) or $5500 with vanos (meaning you supply nothing), which must be paid in full up front. Please review our
Core Charge Policy for details. Delivery is FOB at our shop, but we have a close relationship with a specialized shipping broker and can arrange secured insured shipping all over the world, sometimes as quickly as overnight. Lead time generally is 120 days from the date we receive your deposit and your core if you are providing one. If you are subject to a race schedule and have specific timing requirements for delivery of your engine, please reach out to Peter Partee (peters@parteeracing.com) to discuss.
